How To Start a Successful Internet Business

This interview is with Judd Burdon of Site Build It!.

If you have ever been interested in starting your own Internet-based business, this interview is for you.

Judd and I discuss a proven, straight-forward, step-by-step process to building a successful Internet business. It is a system that works for those who work it.

In fact, Judd is a successful Site Build It! customer who runs a $1.6 million website that sells... you'd never guess... Asphalt supplies.

Yes, that is one point six million dollars per year for a website about asphalt driveways. Now, ashpalt may not sound relevant to you, but if he can build something that big - around something that niche - then you just might want to listen to this interview...

If you have a passion that you've always wanted to turn into an Internet business, you'll learn:

  • How real people like you are experiencing real success online. That's not a pitch, it's not over-the-top. Just a statement of fact.
  • Case study example of one person who makes $35-40,000 per month selling information about kite-surfing.
  • The right way to use online tools to build a real business, not a "get rich quick" scheme
  • How to turn your hobby, passion, body of knowledge into an income - and how real people have made it happen.
  • Starting right at the beginning (What is Internet Marketing?) and progressing to more complex information (the importance of keyword research).
  • What kind of things can you sell on the Internet? What kind of business can you build on the Internet?
  • How to determine what your website should be about... how to ensure you don't make the biggest mistake of all - choosing a niche that nobody else is interested in! (or second worse, choosing a niche that is so broad or competitive that you'll always be a small fish in a big ocean.)
  • The different ways of monetizing your knowledge. You can make money on the Internet in a lot of different ways... products, information, advertising, affiliates, leads, and more. What is the best way to make money in your niche?
  • Why monetization is NOT THE FIRST THING TO WORRY ABOUT when starting your Internet business. In fact... it's the last!
  • How to use the CTPM formula to build a real, solid business on the Internet.
  • Why "pre-selling" potential customers is so important to the success of your business.
  • How to build a successful online business without knowing html, content management, traffic, webmail, rss, sitemaps, ftp, holy moly - you could waste years learning all the technology that is out there...
  • Why you need to avoid, at all costs, spending too much money on your web designer, programmer, and even a merchant account when you're first getting started. (And how to avoid spending too much money on those things.)
  • How to get a personalized consultation, for your situation, on getting started with your own Internet business.
You can listen to this interview right from here, or download it to your computer.

Online Tools and Resources

There are a lot of tools that I use for my business. Many of them are free - and the ones that I pay for are worth every penny.

Since I'm often asked what I use for "this", or how I do "that"... I thought it would be cool to share some of the free and paid resources that I use.

Here ya go!

FREE TOOLS

Jing

If you want to do simple screen capture videos like I do for this blog, jing is a nice free resource. You can upload the video to their hosting service to share it with people easily.

I prefer to use Camtasia Studio for this - but it costs $300 - which is not really a justified expense unless you do as much video work as I do...

Remember The Milk

I am a forgetful bastard. It's just a truth that I have come to accept. So I use Remember The Milk to help me be less bastard-ish. And, my wife loves me more when I remember stuff...

This free tool keeps track of all the things that must get done. It has a super-slick interface, easy to use, sends me emails and text messages, and the help files are... helpful.

For calendar items like appointments and meetings see:

Google Calendar

Very nice, intuitive interface. Google nailed it.

I love the reminder options... if you set up a pop-up, an email, and a text message - there is NO WAY you'll forget about that stupid meeting.

Google GMail

I LOVE Gmail. It is, far and away, the best online email there is. Even if you like to use Outlook or Eudora, you can set up Gmail to be accessible by POP3, IMAP (for your blackberry), iPhone, etc...

You can set up as many email addresses from different domains within the system as you want. When somebody sends an email to one of your other addresses, it will appear in the same inbox - and when you hit reply, you'll reply with the email that they sent to (not the default gmail address).

Google Apps for Your Domain is also highly recommended. You can get up to 200 free email accounts for your business.

LogMeIn

Remote access to your home PC.

Royalty-free Photos

Pictures and photos add a lot to your online OR offline presentation. I also like to use iStockPhoto, but that's a paid site.

Gimp

Edit graphics, photos, and more for Free. This is another free source program that often beats the paid solutions available. For free materials on how to use the program, go to:

Audacity

I edit a lot of audios! For manipulating audio files (wav, mp3, etc) this program rocks the house. A long time ago I was in a band... I wish this program was available back then...

Kompozer

Create an attractive, professional-looking web site without needing to know HTML or web coding. I prefer to hand code my websites... but I'm a nerd. (and maybe that's why they look so terrible!)

FileZilla

You’ll need this for uploading and downloading files, pages, videos, PDFs, and more to your website. By far the best FTP client out there... and it's free!

Wordpress

This is the most common software for running a blog. Don't have a blog? (you should think about getting one... it's a nice way to build content and keep in touch with your customers.)

Skype

Skype is GREAT. Every guru that I pay to help me with my business uses Skype, and for good reason. You can talk to other Skype users for free - chat - and make ridiculously cheap phone calls.

One time a couple years ago my wife went to Paris for 10 days, and I was at home in Los Angeles. Using Skype I would call her hotel - and we talked for hours every day. The grand total for 10 days of international calls? About $12.

Google Analytics

This is the basics of tracking your traffic at your site. Simply add their code to the bottom of each of your pages and watch them track everything for your site. You can even set “goals” for your site such as subscriptions or sales by adding the code to your thank you pages. Check on your conversion rates from your traffic this way.

Before Google purchased this analytics package (it was called Urchin), they sold it for something CRAZY like $500/month. Now it's free. Install it now.

Google Optimizer

This is my secret weapon for success. Any online project I've ever made "work" was due to extensive split testing...

Anyone who has a Google Adwords account has access to this free split testing or multivariate testing solution. Set-up multiple test options such as your headline, photo, intro paragraph, price, and guarantee. Then let their optimizer test your page and put together the best performing page for you.

osTicket

Set up your own support ticket system to handle any customer inquiries. Email is unreliable and a little harder for a team to track.

Just found this one - will be setting it up for myself very soon... so unlike the rest of the tools on this list, i can't personally vouch for it (but I AM looking forward to trying it out)

AVG

This is virus protection software. Don't get a virus - it sucks - and you'll be sorry you didn't do something to prevent it... Protect your computer with their free version or their paid version. My IT pro friends use this program for all their clients. I’ve found their software puts a lighter load on your processing power than most of the other options out there.

Free Conference Call

Really cool conference line. When I do an interview I have the expert call my free conference call line (a normal long distance phone number) and it's a simple matter to record the call and download the wav file afterward. I have never once received an email or communication from this site. They say that the line is only valid for a few months, but I've had it for years - and they've never shut it down...

Pandora - Streaming Music

This doesn't really have anything to do with business... or... maybe I can figure out a way to tie it in.

OK, I sit around all day long and work on the computer, WHILE LISTENING to Pandora! If you don't know about this site, please please go check it out. You can set up stations for any kind of music, and tweak and personalize to your taste.

If there was a "Travis Award For Coolness", this website would get it.

PAID STUFF

LLC and Incorporation Formation

LegalZoom is, hands-down, the best service provider in the world when it comes to legal paperwork. I have personally used them for several Incorporations, LLC's, and my Last Will.

The link above is an affiliate link. If you click through it and use LegalZoom for any type of service, I will get a commission. If you want to be a butthead (technical term), you can just go straight there instead of clicking that link. (but I'm gonna make you type it in yourself - take that!)

Elance

Programmers, designers, virtual assistants, writers, video editors, engineers... I've hired all sorts of characters on Elance. It has been a truly fantastic resource for my business.

You submit your proposal and then service providers bid on your project. You have the opportunity to review their references, work history, and communicate back and forth before choosing one. You don't even NEED to choose one at all...

Web Hosting - site build it

They offer the only all-inclusive website success strategy that I know of. And, it is very (very) good. I talked for almost an hour with their Director of Sales about the Site Sell approach - and it resonates very well with me. And it should, after all, 5 years ago I got my start in Internet marketing by purchasing a book (which they now give away for free) and diving into their information.

Quit messing around with get rich quick schemes and MLM. You don't need to learn every technology to have a successful web business, they offer all the tools you need. Don't go with any other web hosting company - give this process a real effort and you have multiplied (cubed?) your chances for Internet success: http://www.InternetBusinessVictory.com

GoDaddy - Domain Names

I remember, way back in the day, when I used to pay $35 a year for my domains... Through GoDaddy they only cost $10, and the control panel is quite powerful.

I buy all of my domain names (I own around 70 of them) through GoDaddy - love 'em. Want to kiss and hug 'em. Not a huge fan of their commercials - and Bob Parsons (the owner) scares me a little - but this is a company that has my undying faith and love.

AWeber - Create Email Newsletters

All of my email (both autoresponders and broadcast messages) is handled through AWeber. They offer similar functionality and deliverability rates as the big boys - at a ridiculous fraction of the cost.

I spent a little time on the phone with some guys from an "enterprise email" solution, and they STARTED at about $1,500/month. .... ok .... or you could go with Aweber and pay $19.95 per month... I think you know what to do!

Kunaki - CD and DVD Duplication

Some of my other Internet businesses sell videos - and these guys handle all my design, duplication, and even fulfillment! Hard to beat...

Sometimes they have a "wait list" to become a new customer. I guess that just goes to show just how good of a service they offer...

Casting Words - Transcription Service

I have these folks transcribe all my audio interviews. The quality is outstanding! The price is right.

I upload the transcriptions to my site and offer them in addition to the mp3. This provides people the opportunity to "read" the interview, and is great content that search engine spiders love.

That's all folks!

How Writing Helps Build Authority and Respect

It was 11 years ago when I published my first Article on the Internet. It was a niche topic for a website catering to hard-core programmers.

It was the turning point of my professional career. It was the moment that others started taking me seriously. Whenever anyone looked my name up on the search engines, all of a sudden hundreds of results would come back from different outlets that had syndicated the article.

I landed a couple of jobs just because of that one article. I mean, I worked hard to become a good programmer, but around the turn of the century, there were many good programmers out of work… (And they had prestigious degrees, my only degree is from the school of hard knocks) that article was the competitive difference I needed to push me ahead of the others…

To this day, 11 years later, that article still comes up in the search results when you Google my name. It’s amazing for me to think that something I did so long ago would have continued to have such an impact on my life…. So many years later.

Then, in 2003, I paid $800 dollars to syndicate a Press Release when I started a company called RideOnTime. At the time, I remember thinking… “This is a hell of a lot of money just to tell a few folks on the Internet that I’m starting a new company with a few friends…” But the effects of that Press Release still benefit me today. I’ve had the craziest things happen since that Press Release went out…

Prior to syndicating the Release, I was “a decent programmer”. That Press Release was published on news, transportation and technology press sites all over the Internet. All of a sudden, I was “a businessman” – a Chief Technology Officer – a respected and senior ranking person, in the press for what I accomplished.

Weird things started to happen to me. One day a man called me out of the blue and remarked that I “was all over the Internet”, and asked if he could invest in any of my companies … I didn’t know what to say… so I said “no”. (I often wonder what would have happened had I said “yes” instead). Then, my daughter’s mother took me back to court for more child support because, now that I was a “Chief Technology Offer”, I must be making more money! Lol. I was still the same, broke dude that I was before!

That press release is also still in the search results for my name. If you Google ‘travis giggy rideontime’ you can see lots of stuff hanging around. That was 5 years ago…

I could relate more stories about publishing on the Internet, because I’ve found it to be one of the more important activities that I can do. But I think you get the point!

The bottom line is, that, my career has benefited by the small amount of writing that I have done. The simple fact that you are here, reading this letter, is proof enough of the power of writing. The benefits are many…

The Benefits of Being a Writer

Authority

The number one benefit of being a published writer is that, simply… once you publish a work of your own writing; now you are an author. What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the word author?

For many people, the first thing is a single word thought – authority. A published author gains respect and authority for their subject matter. And what advantages does authority give you? How about this for a start:

  • Your reputation will precede you. The first impression a person has determines the lifetime of how you interact. When you walk into the room as a known authority, you have the upper hand, the power, the attention of your audience. You make a first impression within 3 seconds of your first meeting - if you walk in the door as a “known authority”, and then there is a much better chance that first impression will be a good one.
  • Increased competitiveness. If a potential client must opt between someone who is a published author, a well-known authority in the field, and somebody without those credentials… who do you think they are going to choose? It’s a no-brainer!
  • Increased credibility. Authority = credibility. Few people will differ on your viewpoint if you are an authority on the subject. Another person must respect your viewpoints, even if they don't agree.
  • Higher fees. If you provide a service (like a consultant, coach, graphic artist, doctor, therapist, financial advisor, accountant, or other service professional), a history of published materials gives you license to charge higher rates. It all comes because of credibility. Many people want to work with “the best of the best”, and are more than willing (it even makes them feel better) to pay top dollar for the peace-of-mind that an expert brings. If you are a published professional, your rates should be higher than everyone else.

That’s just a start. I’ll go over the benefits of being a published author in more detail in a future post, but I think you are starting to get my point!

Business Collateral

A large part of being in business for yourself is the interface with clients. Every business has clients. Every business must communicate with those clients in one form or another. If you’re like most businesses, you have to have a LOT of material to put in front of your clients. Here is a brief list of things you might need to write down before you can get your business started:

  • Web site
  • Ads
  • Flyers / brochures
  • Proposals and Quotes
  • Presentations
  • Position papers
  • Customer support emails
  • Autoresponder emails
  • Newsletter
  • Client follow-up
  • Repeat business
  • Referral requests
  • Internal communication, manuals, project planning, etc...

Once again, this is a brief list of items. By no means is it comprehensive.

The bottom line is – to be in business, you must be a writer. And if you are smart, you’ll become a published writer – an author. And Internet publishing means you get the SEO benefits…

Search Engines Optimization (SEO)

Publishing yourself on the Internet is a great idea. Just imagine the impression it makes when somebody Google's your name or business and sees thousands of websites have published your Articles and Press Releases…

Plus, every time you publish an article or press release on the Internet, it should include links back to your web site. Each link that points to your web site, in Google’s eyes, counts as a “vote” for your site. The more “votes” you have, compared to your online competitors, the more likely you are to appear at the top of the search results.

Being at the top of the search results means free traffic, more customers, and more money. It can get complicated, but the basics are easy– it’s not Rocket Science… and I will teach you more soon… (If you follow a few simple best practices, you’ll be ahead of 95% of the sites on the Net.)

I’ll go over the specifics of Search Engine Optimization in much more detail soon.

(Off topic: Next week, I will interview one of the foremost experts on the Internet when it comes to SEO. That recording will be available shortly thereafter…)

In Summary…

Becoming a writer is not for everyone. Some people find it tedious and boring. Some people never took the time to learn grammar (not really needed to become a writer, but it helps with confidence and readability). But, and I stress this BUT – if you’re an entrepreneur, and you want to be successful in business… you must be able to communicate in writing. And if you publish yourself, it’s like a catapult to the top ranks of respect, authority, credibility, and puts you on the fast track to success.

Writing opens doors that would never have presented themselves otherwise. I can attest to this fact personally. My next several posts are going to be on this topic, because it is very very important, and I want to drive it home.

I’ll be giving you some hints and tips on becoming a better writer – and then I’ll show you the most powerful method in the world to get published all over the Internet, just like I have had the luck and luxury of being.

I am interested in hearing your thoughts about the subject. Also, if I could show you a way to get published on thousands of websites, all over the Internet, month after month, and reap the rewards of all that comes with it… would you be interested in learning? If you have thoughts on this topic, just leave a comment below.

Looking forward to next time,

Travis

"How do I get started in such a venture?"

Last night, I received an email from Bob in Illinois. Bob asks a question that I get often - "how do I get started?". So, with his permission, I am posting the original email and my response here. I hope it is helpful.

On Feb 6, 2008 8:20 PM, <p......b@c...t.net> wrote:
Travis,

I was interested to see you mentioned vacation spots as an example of a possible application. I've thought about that aspect for a while. My idea focuses on Timeshare. It seems there are numerous sites that ask for fees up-front without delivering. As a timeshare owner myself, I'd love a place that is well publicized where I could post my timeshare, like I've done with my Chicago Bears tix on StubHub.

Trouble is, I haven't the first idea how to get started. Where can I learn about the basics of starting such a venture?

Thanks,

Bob M....

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the note!

I think to get a venture like this off the ground you need three primary skills.

The first is the easiest to acquire, and that is basic Internet technology implementation. You'll need to know about programmers and designers and online marketing options.

The second is market research. You need to know if people with timeshares (or looking for them) are willing to engage you and build a relationship. You need to know if there is a pain point that you can address and solve. For this, I must recommend Glenn Livingston's survey model. It is extremely thorough - it will give you the data on your market you need to succeed. I have used it several times now - and if you can handle the intensity, you are WAAAAY ahead of the game.

http://www.howtodoubleyourbusiness.com/

The third is the less tangible, which is basic business sense. I just finished reading a book called "Jump Start Your Business Brain" by Doug Hall that goes into great detail about crafting a business idea that can succeed. I highly recommend it!

In addition to these skills, you need a whole lot of determination and fortitude. When I first got into e-business I was looking for the silver bullet. And I sometimes still find myself trying to take the easy way out. But the thing is - that never works. It takes years to build a successful business online, just like it does offline. If you're not committed and "in love" then you're not likely to succeed!

Hope this is helpful.
