Merry Business and Happy New Goals

Today I'm going to share with you one of my most powerful secrets of success. But first...

In the beginning of December, I re-launched my Startup Victory training, with a guarantee of profitability, or 250% back. You can check it out here:

http://www.StartupVictory.com

I've been lost in the ether ever since. December has been crazy! My businesses are booming - I just haven't had the time!

This week is a very special one for me, and despite my lack of time I just had to get this email out to you...

It is an important one... Some people who have been on my list for years have gotten this message several times.

Well, here goes again!

-----------------------------------------
Tomorrow marks not only the end of 2009, but also the end of this decade.
-----------------------------------------

Now is the time for some serious thought.

Most entrepreneurs stay so busy with what is in front of them, they don't take any time to think about the future, ponder the past, and prepare themselves mentally for the upcoming year.

The week between Christmas and New Years is very special for me. I usually take the entire week off for reflection, prediction, and preparation.

I ponder the year gone by, and write down the lessons I've learned.

I think about what I want to accomplish in the upcoming year.

I review the goals I set last year, and see how many were accomplished. (Once I write down my goals, I don't look at them again until the following December. It is amazing how many are accomplished...)

THE SIMPLE ACT OF WRITING SOMETHING DOWN IS SO POWERFUL, IT CANNOT BE UNDERESTIMATED

... especially when it is done with the intention of referring back to it later on.

If you're like me, you've been getting a hundred-thousand "2010 prediction" emails recently.

It is because marketers in particular know the power of a prediction.

Writing your 2010 goals down is like making your own prediction... It is an extremely powerful method to improve the results you get in 2010.

Here is how I do it:

--------------------------------------------
HOW TO DOUBLE YOUR EFFECTIVENESS IN 2010
--------------------------------------------

** All of this should be written down. Put it in a safe place where you'll find it next year. **

* What big things happened? Did they happen because you made a knowing, concerted effort to make them happen? Or... did they just happen?

  - "Audaces fortuna iuvat" is latin for "Fortune favors the bold". In other words, there is a big difference between "letting" something happen, and "making" something happen.

By writing down your goals this year, you are taking the first step to MAKING SOMETHING HAPPEN.

* What good things happened? What bad things happened?

  - What lessons did you learn from these things? You don't need to take a lot of time to extract the meaning - just write down the
first thing that pops into your mind... trust me, the act of writing it down will make it stick.

* What do you want to happen next year?

  - Break your goals down into as many categories as you need to.

    Mine are:
    - PERSONAL
    - PROFESSIONAL
    - TRAVEL

  - I often write my goals down in past tense, as if they already happened. This has the effect of tricking my brain into visualizing what it was like, enforcing the already powerful magic of writing everything down.

  - Be specific, and write down everything that comes to your mind. You can always revise it or eliminate it later.

Here are some ideas to grease the tracks:
* Do you want to have more time?
* Do you want to make more money? How much? In what fashion?
* Do you want to go places? With who? In what fashion?
* Do you want to read more? Fiction? Non-fiction?
* Do you want more material things? Cars, house, clothes, etc?
* Do you want to learn new skills?
* Do you want to spend more time with certain people?
* Do you want to run a race? Climb a mountain? Learn a new language?
* Who do you want to be perceived as? (What kind of a person?)
* Who do you want to meet?
* What charities do you want to give to?

Now put it away. Give yourself a 2 day breather to reflect on the things you've written down.

Come back to it in a couple of days. Revise as appropriate.

Then, show your significant other. Or your mother. (Yeah, that sounds scary, but it's important because the act of showing it to somebody else "commits you" to the concepts you've written down.)

Now, store it in a safe place to review at this time next year.

You are done - your subconscious has been sufficiently primed for success next year. Congratulations!

Now... HAVE A HAPPY HAPPY NEW YEAR. I wish you the best of success in 2010!

It's gonna be a fun ride.

Looking forward,

Travis Giggy

Online Tools and Resources

There are a lot of tools that I use for my business. Many of them are free - and the ones that I pay for are worth every penny.

Since I'm often asked what I use for "this", or how I do "that"... I thought it would be cool to share some of the free and paid resources that I use.

Here ya go!

FREE TOOLS

Jing

If you want to do simple screen capture videos like I do for this blog, jing is a nice free resource. You can upload the video to their hosting service to share it with people easily.

I prefer to use Camtasia Studio for this - but it costs $300 - which is not really a justified expense unless you do as much video work as I do...

Remember The Milk

I am a forgetful bastard. It's just a truth that I have come to accept. So I use Remember The Milk to help me be less bastard-ish. And, my wife loves me more when I remember stuff...

This free tool keeps track of all the things that must get done. It has a super-slick interface, easy to use, sends me emails and text messages, and the help files are... helpful.

For calendar items like appointments and meetings see:

Google Calendar

Very nice, intuitive interface. Google nailed it.

I love the reminder options... if you set up a pop-up, an email, and a text message - there is NO WAY you'll forget about that stupid meeting.

Google GMail

I LOVE Gmail. It is, far and away, the best online email there is. Even if you like to use Outlook or Eudora, you can set up Gmail to be accessible by POP3, IMAP (for your blackberry), iPhone, etc...

You can set up as many email addresses from different domains within the system as you want. When somebody sends an email to one of your other addresses, it will appear in the same inbox - and when you hit reply, you'll reply with the email that they sent to (not the default gmail address).

Google Apps for Your Domain is also highly recommended. You can get up to 200 free email accounts for your business.

LogMeIn

Remote access to your home PC.

Royalty-free Photos

Pictures and photos add a lot to your online OR offline presentation. I also like to use iStockPhoto, but that's a paid site.

Gimp

Edit graphics, photos, and more for Free. This is another free source program that often beats the paid solutions available. For free materials on how to use the program, go to:

Audacity

I edit a lot of audios! For manipulating audio files (wav, mp3, etc) this program rocks the house. A long time ago I was in a band... I wish this program was available back then...

Kompozer

Create an attractive, professional-looking web site without needing to know HTML or web coding. I prefer to hand code my websites... but I'm a nerd. (and maybe that's why they look so terrible!)

FileZilla

You’ll need this for uploading and downloading files, pages, videos, PDFs, and more to your website. By far the best FTP client out there... and it's free!

Wordpress

This is the most common software for running a blog. Don't have a blog? (you should think about getting one... it's a nice way to build content and keep in touch with your customers.)

Skype

Skype is GREAT. Every guru that I pay to help me with my business uses Skype, and for good reason. You can talk to other Skype users for free - chat - and make ridiculously cheap phone calls.

One time a couple years ago my wife went to Paris for 10 days, and I was at home in Los Angeles. Using Skype I would call her hotel - and we talked for hours every day. The grand total for 10 days of international calls? About $12.

Google Analytics

This is the basics of tracking your traffic at your site. Simply add their code to the bottom of each of your pages and watch them track everything for your site. You can even set “goals” for your site such as subscriptions or sales by adding the code to your thank you pages. Check on your conversion rates from your traffic this way.

Before Google purchased this analytics package (it was called Urchin), they sold it for something CRAZY like $500/month. Now it's free. Install it now.

Google Optimizer

This is my secret weapon for success. Any online project I've ever made "work" was due to extensive split testing...

Anyone who has a Google Adwords account has access to this free split testing or multivariate testing solution. Set-up multiple test options such as your headline, photo, intro paragraph, price, and guarantee. Then let their optimizer test your page and put together the best performing page for you.

osTicket

Set up your own support ticket system to handle any customer inquiries. Email is unreliable and a little harder for a team to track.

Just found this one - will be setting it up for myself very soon... so unlike the rest of the tools on this list, i can't personally vouch for it (but I AM looking forward to trying it out)

AVG

This is virus protection software. Don't get a virus - it sucks - and you'll be sorry you didn't do something to prevent it... Protect your computer with their free version or their paid version. My IT pro friends use this program for all their clients. I’ve found their software puts a lighter load on your processing power than most of the other options out there.

Free Conference Call

Really cool conference line. When I do an interview I have the expert call my free conference call line (a normal long distance phone number) and it's a simple matter to record the call and download the wav file afterward. I have never once received an email or communication from this site. They say that the line is only valid for a few months, but I've had it for years - and they've never shut it down...

Pandora - Streaming Music

This doesn't really have anything to do with business... or... maybe I can figure out a way to tie it in.

OK, I sit around all day long and work on the computer, WHILE LISTENING to Pandora! If you don't know about this site, please please go check it out. You can set up stations for any kind of music, and tweak and personalize to your taste.

If there was a "Travis Award For Coolness", this website would get it.

PAID STUFF

LLC and Incorporation Formation

LegalZoom is, hands-down, the best service provider in the world when it comes to legal paperwork. I have personally used them for several Incorporations, LLC's, and my Last Will.

The link above is an affiliate link. If you click through it and use LegalZoom for any type of service, I will get a commission. If you want to be a butthead (technical term), you can just go straight there instead of clicking that link. (but I'm gonna make you type it in yourself - take that!)

Elance

Programmers, designers, virtual assistants, writers, video editors, engineers... I've hired all sorts of characters on Elance. It has been a truly fantastic resource for my business.

You submit your proposal and then service providers bid on your project. You have the opportunity to review their references, work history, and communicate back and forth before choosing one. You don't even NEED to choose one at all...

Web Hosting - site build it

They offer the only all-inclusive website success strategy that I know of. And, it is very (very) good. I talked for almost an hour with their Director of Sales about the Site Sell approach - and it resonates very well with me. And it should, after all, 5 years ago I got my start in Internet marketing by purchasing a book (which they now give away for free) and diving into their information.

Quit messing around with get rich quick schemes and MLM. You don't need to learn every technology to have a successful web business, they offer all the tools you need. Don't go with any other web hosting company - give this process a real effort and you have multiplied (cubed?) your chances for Internet success: http://www.InternetBusinessVictory.com

GoDaddy - Domain Names

I remember, way back in the day, when I used to pay $35 a year for my domains... Through GoDaddy they only cost $10, and the control panel is quite powerful.

I buy all of my domain names (I own around 70 of them) through GoDaddy - love 'em. Want to kiss and hug 'em. Not a huge fan of their commercials - and Bob Parsons (the owner) scares me a little - but this is a company that has my undying faith and love.

AWeber - Create Email Newsletters

All of my email (both autoresponders and broadcast messages) is handled through AWeber. They offer similar functionality and deliverability rates as the big boys - at a ridiculous fraction of the cost.

I spent a little time on the phone with some guys from an "enterprise email" solution, and they STARTED at about $1,500/month. .... ok .... or you could go with Aweber and pay $19.95 per month... I think you know what to do!

Kunaki - CD and DVD Duplication

Some of my other Internet businesses sell videos - and these guys handle all my design, duplication, and even fulfillment! Hard to beat...

Sometimes they have a "wait list" to become a new customer. I guess that just goes to show just how good of a service they offer...

Casting Words - Transcription Service

I have these folks transcribe all my audio interviews. The quality is outstanding! The price is right.

I upload the transcriptions to my site and offer them in addition to the mp3. This provides people the opportunity to "read" the interview, and is great content that search engine spiders love.

That's all folks!

How Writing Helps Build Authority and Respect

It was 11 years ago when I published my first Article on the Internet. It was a niche topic for a website catering to hard-core programmers.

It was the turning point of my professional career. It was the moment that others started taking me seriously. Whenever anyone looked my name up on the search engines, all of a sudden hundreds of results would come back from different outlets that had syndicated the article.

I landed a couple of jobs just because of that one article. I mean, I worked hard to become a good programmer, but around the turn of the century, there were many good programmers out of work… (And they had prestigious degrees, my only degree is from the school of hard knocks) that article was the competitive difference I needed to push me ahead of the others…

To this day, 11 years later, that article still comes up in the search results when you Google my name. It’s amazing for me to think that something I did so long ago would have continued to have such an impact on my life…. So many years later.

Then, in 2003, I paid $800 dollars to syndicate a Press Release when I started a company called RideOnTime. At the time, I remember thinking… “This is a hell of a lot of money just to tell a few folks on the Internet that I’m starting a new company with a few friends…” But the effects of that Press Release still benefit me today. I’ve had the craziest things happen since that Press Release went out…

Prior to syndicating the Release, I was “a decent programmer”. That Press Release was published on news, transportation and technology press sites all over the Internet. All of a sudden, I was “a businessman” – a Chief Technology Officer – a respected and senior ranking person, in the press for what I accomplished.

Weird things started to happen to me. One day a man called me out of the blue and remarked that I “was all over the Internet”, and asked if he could invest in any of my companies … I didn’t know what to say… so I said “no”. (I often wonder what would have happened had I said “yes” instead). Then, my daughter’s mother took me back to court for more child support because, now that I was a “Chief Technology Offer”, I must be making more money! Lol. I was still the same, broke dude that I was before!

That press release is also still in the search results for my name. If you Google ‘travis giggy rideontime’ you can see lots of stuff hanging around. That was 5 years ago…

I could relate more stories about publishing on the Internet, because I’ve found it to be one of the more important activities that I can do. But I think you get the point!

The bottom line is, that, my career has benefited by the small amount of writing that I have done. The simple fact that you are here, reading this letter, is proof enough of the power of writing. The benefits are many…

The Benefits of Being a Writer

Authority

The number one benefit of being a published writer is that, simply… once you publish a work of your own writing; now you are an author. What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the word author?

For many people, the first thing is a single word thought – authority. A published author gains respect and authority for their subject matter. And what advantages does authority give you? How about this for a start:

  • Your reputation will precede you. The first impression a person has determines the lifetime of how you interact. When you walk into the room as a known authority, you have the upper hand, the power, the attention of your audience. You make a first impression within 3 seconds of your first meeting - if you walk in the door as a “known authority”, and then there is a much better chance that first impression will be a good one.
  • Increased competitiveness. If a potential client must opt between someone who is a published author, a well-known authority in the field, and somebody without those credentials… who do you think they are going to choose? It’s a no-brainer!
  • Increased credibility. Authority = credibility. Few people will differ on your viewpoint if you are an authority on the subject. Another person must respect your viewpoints, even if they don't agree.
  • Higher fees. If you provide a service (like a consultant, coach, graphic artist, doctor, therapist, financial advisor, accountant, or other service professional), a history of published materials gives you license to charge higher rates. It all comes because of credibility. Many people want to work with “the best of the best”, and are more than willing (it even makes them feel better) to pay top dollar for the peace-of-mind that an expert brings. If you are a published professional, your rates should be higher than everyone else.

That’s just a start. I’ll go over the benefits of being a published author in more detail in a future post, but I think you are starting to get my point!

Business Collateral

A large part of being in business for yourself is the interface with clients. Every business has clients. Every business must communicate with those clients in one form or another. If you’re like most businesses, you have to have a LOT of material to put in front of your clients. Here is a brief list of things you might need to write down before you can get your business started:

  • Web site
  • Ads
  • Flyers / brochures
  • Proposals and Quotes
  • Presentations
  • Position papers
  • Customer support emails
  • Autoresponder emails
  • Newsletter
  • Client follow-up
  • Repeat business
  • Referral requests
  • Internal communication, manuals, project planning, etc...

Once again, this is a brief list of items. By no means is it comprehensive.

The bottom line is – to be in business, you must be a writer. And if you are smart, you’ll become a published writer – an author. And Internet publishing means you get the SEO benefits…

Search Engines Optimization (SEO)

Publishing yourself on the Internet is a great idea. Just imagine the impression it makes when somebody Google's your name or business and sees thousands of websites have published your Articles and Press Releases…

Plus, every time you publish an article or press release on the Internet, it should include links back to your web site. Each link that points to your web site, in Google’s eyes, counts as a “vote” for your site. The more “votes” you have, compared to your online competitors, the more likely you are to appear at the top of the search results.

Being at the top of the search results means free traffic, more customers, and more money. It can get complicated, but the basics are easy– it’s not Rocket Science… and I will teach you more soon… (If you follow a few simple best practices, you’ll be ahead of 95% of the sites on the Net.)

I’ll go over the specifics of Search Engine Optimization in much more detail soon.

(Off topic: Next week, I will interview one of the foremost experts on the Internet when it comes to SEO. That recording will be available shortly thereafter…)

In Summary…

Becoming a writer is not for everyone. Some people find it tedious and boring. Some people never took the time to learn grammar (not really needed to become a writer, but it helps with confidence and readability). But, and I stress this BUT – if you’re an entrepreneur, and you want to be successful in business… you must be able to communicate in writing. And if you publish yourself, it’s like a catapult to the top ranks of respect, authority, credibility, and puts you on the fast track to success.

Writing opens doors that would never have presented themselves otherwise. I can attest to this fact personally. My next several posts are going to be on this topic, because it is very very important, and I want to drive it home.

I’ll be giving you some hints and tips on becoming a better writer – and then I’ll show you the most powerful method in the world to get published all over the Internet, just like I have had the luck and luxury of being.

I am interested in hearing your thoughts about the subject. Also, if I could show you a way to get published on thousands of websites, all over the Internet, month after month, and reap the rewards of all that comes with it… would you be interested in learning? If you have thoughts on this topic, just leave a comment below.

Looking forward to next time,

Travis

There are two kinds of businesses in this world

There are two kinds of businesses in the world. Those that can be bootstrapped and those that can't.

There are a lot of kinds of businesses that NEED money to get started. But oftentimes, lack of money becomes an excuse for not starting something (anything)...

My position is that, if you really want to do something, you can figure out a way to get closer to it. You can figure out a way to get started and raise the sort of profile, knowledge, and contacts that you would need to get the money down the road. Perhaps you'll even raise enough money that you don't need an investor at all...

For example: If you want to open a retail cooking supply store - that takes money. But if you don't have money, what can you do?

Well, how about starting a web site that sells specialty cooking supplies? That doesn't cost very much to get up and running... This would be a fantastic way to start to understand your market - what they want to buy - how much they'll buy it for - what language they speak. In fact, if you don't have this knowledge before you invest a ton of money into your retail outlet, you might regret it (or have to learn it the hard/expensive way).

You would probably find out, very quickly, that you can't sell everyday cooking supplies because there is no money in it. Somebody can just head over to WalMart to get the cheap stuff or Sonoma Williams to get the expensive stuff. You must move to the really niche stuff. Let's say you figure out that people can't find the proper kitchenware to make Korean BBQ, and that you can move that sort of product on EBay. Then you figure out that people are really interested in buying custom sushi sticks. Bang - you just opened an ethnic food cooking supply store online. Chances are, that would work offline as well.

Need another example? Ok...

Let's say you want to open a natural gas company to drill newly opened territory. That takes a lot of money. You say you don't have that kind of money, huh?

Well, if you have the kind of experience that would allow you to be successful in this busiess, other companies will gladly pay you for your time. You could start a consulting firm to identify natural gas deposits, or fill out government paperwork and obtain permits. This approach allows you to build alliances, create a name for yourself, and time to find investors or build a solid business plan for investment.

The point of all this is... you've gotta get out there and do it.

There are two kinds of people in this world. Those that take action and those that dream of taking action.

What can you do to move closer to making your DREAM a reality today?

1. If your ideal business requires money, what portion can you implement without money? A lot of businesses can be operated on a smaller scale without nearly as much time or money investment. When you're a small business, it is ALWAYS better to take action NOW, with an imperfect plan - than to wait for the perfect time or the perfect product.

2. Can you start a consultancy? Something you could get paid to do in your spare time?

3. Can you find a mentor that is already doing something similar, whom you can help out in exchange for the experience and contacts?

The moral of the story is that, if you don't move into action you may never have the opportunity. BUT, if you get started - if you start a rock rolling downhill, it just may pick up steam and turn into an unstoppable force.

So, here it is one last time: GET IT GOING! (what are you waiting for?)

Who you gonna call? Productivity for small business owners.

(As they say in Ghostbusters)

Who you gonna call

(when you REALLY don’t feel like working)?

Since you work for yourself… there IS nobody to call!

You know the saying, “When you work for yourself, you have the toughest boss there is.” I mean, this boss won’t even give you a mental health day off - or any comp time for those late nights. And, you have to be on your death bed before you can call in sick.

Believe it or not, we all have days when it is just not that easy to get going, or to be productive when you get there. Let’s face it – even when you’re in business for yourself, with all the incentive in the world, it is sometimes hard to stay motivated and productive every day.

You…just….have…to…get…going.

Here are some tips, tricks, tasks and techniques that will help to push you into action on those kinds of days.

See the bottom of this post for more on how you can provide your own input on how to get going!

Most of these ideas will actually come from your old world of (sorry to have to use this word) working for others. Routines, schedules, appointments, deadlines and interaction with others are pretty powerful incentives for getting things done, and getting them done in a timely manner. If the nature of your career does not automatically impose these restrictions on your working day, you have to find other ways of imposing them on yourself.

Let’s face it, when you work for “the man”:

  • You have to get to the office at a certain time
  • You have quarterly sales targets to meet
  • You have to file reports or make presentations at given, fixed intervals
  • Etc.
If you don’t - there will be repercussions!

Since you are now the man (whatever your gender may be), you have to play that role as well as many other roles in your company.

Your Work Hours

First and foremost, report to work on time. Fix your working hours and do not let anything but the direst emergency interfere with them. Especially if you have employees of your own, this simple, old fashioned tradition will work wonders. You know from the good old days how employees can be tempted to slack off when the boss is not around. In addition, setting an example for your staff that you are happy and excited to get in and get started will spark excitement in them as well. Don’t expect your employees to feel pumped up about the work they are doing when the person who is benefiting the most from it does not show any excitement. Get into work a few minutes before your “start” time, make or pour your coffee and sit down at your desk by 9:00, or whatever time you have chosen, rarin’ to go.

For the sake of balance, family harmony and your health, you should also have a fairly fixed quitting time. Yes, you may have to work later on occasion, just as in the bad old days, but wasn’t that one of the things you decided to escape? Of course, take advantage of adjustments in your work routine that now allow you extra hours, but don’t become a slave to your freed up time. If you have given up a two hour commute for a fifteen minute ride to the office, then great, you have an extra hour and a half in your workday now. An hour and a half, however, not four. Start closing down, planning your next day and clearing your desk fifteen or twenty minutes before your self imposed quitting time and then get up and leave.

Scheduling Tasks

The district sales manager (you) no longer requires a monthly sales report. The comptroller (you) no longer requires a monthly P& L. The accounting clerk (you) doesn’t even pester you for your travel vouchers to close out that last business trip. Just because no one asks you for these reports and statements doesn’t mean that they don’t have to be done. They do, and if they are not done in a timely manner, you will end up pulling together the information in a haphazard manner when it is needed for a bank loan, a tax return or to balance the checking account. To avoid this, it is necessary to include some of the old deadlines and routines of the work world in your own business. The nice thing about being your own boss is that you can pick the parts you want to keep, like order and routine, and discard the bad parts, like an unreasonable boss, a long commute and the limits of a paycheck.

In this area, once again, it helps to pretend that you have a boss watching over your shoulder. Make a list of the chores, reports and duties you know should be done routinely. Use a simple system like a calendar or a computerized version of a tickler system, but take the time to schedule a fixed date for all of these tasks and STICK TO IT. Review your sales and profits on at least a monthly basis, whether you do it manually or with an accounting program. Balance the company checking account by the 20th of the month, if it is normally received by the 15th. Fix a date to inventory stock, or even office supplies. How often has a small project turned into a big one when you had to run out to get the necessary supplies? Attending to these tasks in an orderly manner, and on a scheduled basis will save you time and even money.

Motivation

When are you legitimately sick, and when are you just not in the mood today and, since no one is really expecting you in anyway, you can just goof off? If you are not 100% motivated today, it is easier to find an excuse not to work when you do not have someone to answer to.

Once again, we have to look to the alternate work world that our jealous friends and neighbors live in. If you were at your old job, would you really call in sick today? You have a report due (it’s on your calendar, and you are sticking to it, remember?), you are behind in your sales goal for the month and you need to review a project that one of your staff has been working on. Looking at your calendar for the day, you realize how important each of these things is to your long term goal, and you report in as usual, even if you are tired, have a little headache or it’s too sunny to be indoors.

Looking at the other side of the coin, you also have to be able to judge the times when you really need to take off. If all of the above items were scheduled for today, and you truly didn’t feel well, would you call out sick at your old job? This is the litmus test. Your career would have been greatly affected if these major tasks were neglected, but if you were really under the weather, you would have realized that it simply had to be-you would not have performed at your best in any case. Your business is affected just as much under your current circumstances; the decision process has to be the same. Treat the process the same as well. If you have staff who report to you, call the office and let them know you are sick. Adjust your scheduled tasks to allow for this day, and then concentrate on getting well.

Many of the traditions and processes of the working world developed from a need to get things done efficiently. As much as we may hate to admit it now that we have broken away from that rate race, these systems will work to our advantage in our own businesses as well.
